The George Wahl Memorial Muskie Tournament held on Saturday, September 24 produced only 6 muskies over 40 inches — the least number of fish ever in the 14-year history of this event. The day started out looking like a great day for muskies but first phone call to register a fish didn’t come in until 10:30 am. The next calls, 15 minutes apart, were both for 50-inch muskies during the major.
Winner of the 2022 tournament was Ron Olson with a 50-inch muskie from Minnetonka. Greg Ide, fishing Lake Harriet won second place with the other 50-incher. Andy Jasken, also fishing Lake Harriet, placed third with a 46.5-inch muskie caught late in the day. Rounding out the top five were Robert Kiffmeyer with a 41.5-inch muskie from Eagle Lake and Joe Hartman with a 41-incher from Lake Waconia. Honorable mention goes to Dave Organ who was the first to call in a fish, a 40-incher on MInnetonka that by the end of the day, left him out of the top 5.
All of the top 5 winners earned a plaque that has space for their picture of the fish as well as an Eagle Tail lure, and a $50 Thorne Bros. gift card. Ron Olson received $1000 for his first place win, Greg Ide received $500 and Andy Jasken received $250. Ron and Greg also received an additional $50 gift card from Thorne Bros. from their $50-for-50-inch program.
Every person who registered a muskie and was at the awards program was entered in the Grand Prize drawing for a trip to Whitefish Bay Resort on Lake of the Woods and $500. Grand Prize winner was Ron Olson.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event goes towards our local metro-area muskie fishery. Thank you to all who participated in the 2022 tournament and helped contribute a little to the fishery.
